The average number of years that a person of a given age can expect to live, assuming that age-specific mortality levels remain constant (i.e. the rates observed for the period under review). Thus, there are figures for mean life expectancy for each age.

Some data points are provisional or estimated for the Eurostat sources, please refer to Eurostat (table: [demo_mlexpec]) for more information.

reporting country

Faroe Islands

The annual figures are fluctuating due to the relatively small population. The life expectancy figure are therefore smoothed to obtain a standardised figure showing the actual trend. The smoothing is done using the 'lowess' method (LOcally WEighted Scatterplot Smoothing). Statistics Faroe Islands has based the calculation on the number of days lived between two birthdays, which means that the period usually ranges between two calendar years, e.g. 1990-1991, 2019-2020, etc. For example, for the year 2020 shown here actually is the period 2019-2020.

Greenland

Please note that two different methods for calculating life expectancy has been used for Greenland. For the period up until 1998, period based calculation with a two year period base was used. From 1999 and onwards, cohort based calculation with a two year base is used. The differences in values are visibly minimal.

Finland

Includes Åland.

Åland

From 2005, five year averages i.e., 2015 = 2011-2015. Data from Åland is also included in the data from Finland.

EA

EA refers to the euro area, with a fixed area composition of the current 20 countries (from 2023).

EU

EU refers to EU27_2020, which is the European Union with a fixed area composition of the current 27 countries.
