Fixed start time point 2018 and all newer time periods
Employed: Comprise employees, self-employed persons and assisting spouses. In order to be classified as employed, a person must work, i.e. perform labour against some form of payment for at least one hour during the reference period.

Unemployed: Persons out of work who are available to start working within two weeks and are actively seeking a job.

Not in the labour force: Includes young people still pursuing their education and those engaged in work without compensation as well as the retired and disabled.

Labour force: The sum of employed and unemployed. Figures may not add up because of rounding.

Unemployment rate: Unemployed in percent of the labour force.

Employment rate: Employed in percent of total number of people aged 15-64 (mean or average population during the year).

Break in time series: 2021. For details, see this article.

There are additional breaks in time series and some points show low reliability for the Eurostat-sources. Please refer to Eurostat (tables: lfsa_ugan and lfsa_egan) and related metadata for more information.

For information on employment by type of activity, please see matrix LABO01. The total number of employed persons may differ to 'Total NACE activities' in LABO01 for Greenland and the Faroe Islands due to different data sources and age spans.

reporting country

Faroe Islands

See footnotes in AM01010 Main figures from the labour force survey for more information.

Greenland

15-19 year olds = 18-19 year olds. The age of retirement was increased from 64 years to 65 years per January 1st 2017. Hence, from 2017 the labour force also includes persons of 65 years of age. From 2017, the variable age 'over 60 years' includes 60-65 years of age. For 2010-2016, the variable age 'over 60 years' includes 60-64 years of age.

Finland

Includes Åland.

Åland

Source: ÅSUB.

Unemployment rates are based on register data by the main activity status of the population at the end of each reference year. In 2020, the unemployment rate rose drastically due to the pandemic. The data has a production time of about 22 months. In the matrix KEY01, unemployment rates for Åland are published with a substantially shorter production time. The unemployment rate in KEY01 is based on figures from The Åland Labor Market and Study Service Authority (AMS), and therefore differs from the register based data presented in this matrix.

EU

From September 2020: EU refers to EU27_2020, which is the European Union with a fixed area composition of the current 27 countries.
