Data refer only to theatres and theatre projects supported by state grants directed towards theatre institutions originating directly from a law, regulation, or conveyed through a state grant authority; regardless of the amount of support. International performances and touring productions are included. Amateur and fully privately funded theatres are not included.

Denmark

Data prior to 2016 has been removed due to a new collection method. This leads to a break in the time series between 2015 and 2016 - i.e. figures can not be compared to previous years. Data prior to 2016 will be reintroduced if and when a time series can be reestablished.

Finland

Includes Åland.

Performances and visitors at large and medium size (20 man years or more) drama theatres only (35 theatres in 2001). Data for 2004 and onwards include all state-supported theatres.

Iceland

Includes permanent professional theatres. The figures refer to the theatrical season. Last updated 2022-12-20 with figures until 2020.

Norway

No data avilable for Norway from 2023 and beyond. It was previously delivered by Statistics Norway.

Sweden

Between 1995 and 2010, statistics on theatres in Sweden was produced by the State Art Council (Statens Konstråd). No theatre statistics have been produced since then, but work is underway at the Swedish Agency for Cultural Analysis and hopefully statistics for Sweden will be delivered in the near future.
